Vodaphone are offering a Dell Netbook with built-in mobile broadband at

Netbook Price Monthly Charge Usage Agreement length
Free £25 1GB 24 Months
Free £30 3GB 24 Months
Opinions? Are there any better packages available?

I am after a small powerful package, similar to this, so that I can operate out in the field, as an amateur genealogist and photographer. It will also be used for e-mails, surfing, word processing and processing genealogy / photographic information.

1GB a month is not a great deal of bandwidth . Are you sure you can get reception in the areas you need ?

;)

Yes, I would check the 3G coverage of the areas you intend to use it - I can't get a 3G signal in many places that I would like to be online :)

1GB & 3GB = usage or downloads not the speed.

Or am I missing something?

as Mucks has shown the actual cost for the contractual period is extortionate. It would be much cheaper to go to a Costa, Starbucks etc and log onto their wifi. It'll be around £5-6 an hour

if you want to be able to roam and use it wherever which you seem you want to the cards are good but you'll find that unless you are in a fairly large city the speeds will be similar to a dial up service which lets be honest is crap. In a city you might get 2-3Mbps, am a bit dubious of their stated 'up to 7.2Mbps'

You've said you are an amateur photographer, are you planning on uploading photos to the net?

if you can explain where you'll want to use it and more about what you'll actually be doing on the net

As a note, i have a Samsung NC10. Its brilliant, battery lasts forever and its so light you can chuck it in your bag and go anywhere with it without even knowing its there. I've thought about getting a data card but for what you get fir the money imo its not worth it

One to three GB of downloading is not a lot at all. If you only intend using the net a small amount it may just be enough.

I heard the Samsung NC110 was great, but I've seen the NC120 at a good price recently, is it a better model, anyone got any experience of it?

Netbooks - Good reliable suppliers?

Where is the best place to buy these netbooks (+NC10) at a reasonable price please.

Good reliable suppliers?

These suppliers have been ok with me. Apart from using Citylink who my daughter had a horrendous experience with when they delivered her laptop to Cardiff Uni.

Dabs have always been good for me, although I've never had to return faulty goods to them.

Miscos are ok.

Well here's a turn up for the books - PC World are offering the cheapest price and free postage. My goodness.

And you can always return it to a PC World store if it's troublesome, rather than posting to the supplier. Definitely worth considering.
