The 'mic not working' problem again...help anyone plz.

Tried two mics in the laptop--both work fine using 'sound recorder'.
Tried both mics in 2 other PCs with XP SP2----mic not muted---but the green
graph in 'sound recorder' is flat lined....on both PCs.
Have Googles this in the news groups---loads of people with the similar
problem ---- but no answers.
Any thoughts
