The Lost Home Page

I use XP Pro SP 2 on my desktop and I use Road Runner for Internet and Email
connectivity. Recently I have been unable to access the Road Runner Home
Page. It opens to a blue background and thats it. I did have IE 6 but have
upgraded(?) to IE7 but the symptoms have not changed. Extensive phone
assistance from Time Warner (Road Runner) was unable to fix the problems by
directing me to change settings and concluded that there was a problem with
the integration of the macromedia flash player and IE. This problem is also
evident on my laptop running Win Multimedia. Any assistance would be much
appreciated.

The Roadrunner people are exceptionally clueless when it comes to browsers
and the fualt is probably theirs. While looking for an actual answer, you
can try accessing the non-flash version of the home page at
http://www.rr.com/html/. If that works, you'll at least know for sure
that it is a flash problem. Personally, I use the HTML version
exclusively and rarely go to the bloated and agonizingly slow flash
version.

Thanks Gary but interestingly this brings mu up to a blank white page instead
of a blank blue page - this may be another clue?!

It's definitely a clue, but darned if I know what it means. When I go to
that site, I get instantly redirected to http://www.rr.com/html/index.cfm.
The major difference between that page and the flash page is that the HTML
page loads in a fraction of the time and the right-hand frame is empty
(no loss, in my opinion). Something is preventing the page from being
rendered for you, but I have no idea what that might be. It's evidently
not a flash problem. Have you checked your system for malware?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/26.html

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Use View, Source to see if that page is *really* blank.

Also tell us about any other apps you have which may be interfering
on the communication path, such as firewall, proxy, ad scraper,
script ripper, etc. One simple test if you think you do have such
things running would be to reboot in safe mode with networking
and see if you have the same symptom with this page.

BTW FiddlerTool is showing that URL does an immediate redirect
to /html/check.cfm which looks at Cookie info. In my case, I had
no Cookie info so that page redirected via javascript here:

http://www.rr.com/html/welcome.cfm

So that suggests a few more possibilities for you:
1. delete any Cookies associated with that site
2. make sure that you have scripting enabled
(e.g. doubleclick on the Internet security zone icon in the Status bar
and click on the Default Level button of the Security Settings dialog)
3. Try the above URL (presumably bypassing the Cookie check and
the script caused redirect.

Good luck

Hi,
I'd try uninstalling Flash. See http://snipurl.com/uflash
Then install the latest version from
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

Hope this helps,
Don
