I just got got this error this morning after a restarted of a Windows 2000
server with service pack 4 "The Logon User Interface DLL gina32.dll failed
to load. Conatact your system administrator to replace the DLL, or restore
the original DLL" has anybody else seen this and is there a solution?
Are you sure you wrote the error message correctly? The Windows 2000
Microsoft GINA is MSGINA.DLL, not gina32.dll. The MSGINA.DLL could have
been replaced by third party software, for example remote control
software like the now ancient PC Anywhere replaces the MSGINA with a
version of its own and then changes or adds a GINA entry in the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
to reflect the changed GINA. And, of course, some virus can also
exploit this.
Do you have other Windows 2000 servers at your site? Can you check for
the presence and validity of the Gina32.dll file? I find no reference
for this GINA on the internet, if you do find it on other servers in
your organization, you can copy the GINA from another server and install
in in the System32 folder on the broken server, this can be done with
the Recovery Console.
