Not quite the same but read this article it may give you some clues.

A Single Letter May Be Displayed in the Title Bar
When you run Windows Explorer or start Internet Explorer, the text in the
title bar may be displayed as a single letter (for example, an "M" or an
"E").

Your description doesn't make it clear if the J is in the Title bar
(e.g. replacing the IE icon) or being rendered within the frame.

In the latter case you could also state whether you can detect
the J in each page's View Source. And I would be especially
curious to know in that case if you still see the J when rendering
About:Blank. A J would be easily noticeable in its source.

An option setting which I know could make a difference but don't
know if it would show up in the View Source is a Custom Style Sheet.
