Help!

My PC is possessed!!

Not Easy to fix! I need to get my graphic preferences
back.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroupfaq
..mspx = no help whatsoever.

Nothing is working!! I've been at this for days, b/c
most of my work is graphics.

My AV is up to date, and I have no viruses. My spyware
and cookies are checked and deleted daily.

Somewhere, after a recent update, my file associations
defaulted to MSPaint and I had to manually restore each
association, but IE will not recognize the preferred
graphics programs, and defaults to .bmp.

My PC is clean, all my tmp/temp files, recycle bin,
cache, cookies, have been stripped clean. I keep my
history files limited to one day, and empty my cache
daily. I have also defragged a couple days ago, and ran
chkdisk.

"Delete internet files when closing browser". I always
use this setting. I never save this junk.

I have 74.5GB HDD with 43.7GB free space. I have 1GB
ram, WinXP Home. Never have, and never will use AOL
anything.

What am I missing?
How do I get it back? I did System Restore, the first
time I encountered this, and went back a few days, but no
effect.

Very frustrated.

It sounds like you have tried most
everything...but could you please
describe the exact problem you
are trying to solve?

And what was the recent update
that caused the file associations
problem?

Are you running Windows XP SP1
or SP2?

First, thank you for responding. Second, please forgive
me if I lose my manners. I'm not having any fun or
productivity with my PC these days, and now I am
horrified at the thought of SP2!
Yikes - run!!!

_______________

I use WinXP Home SP1

My most recent updates were IE6 on July 30, which is the
last set. (see list at end of post).

I don't remember the problem going back that long, maybe
2 weeks.

Images only save as "untitled Bitmap .bmp", whether right
click, or image toolbar.

I use Paint Shop Pro 7, almost exclusively, and my file
preferences are for PSP7 to handle all image formats.
They had 'defaulted back' to MSPaint, which I never use.
Should I change file association to IE? Then how will my
PSP7 behave when I want to edit a JPEG or a GIF?

Looked promising, I had a couple of damaged and unknown
files, but still has not helped.

My temp files are clean, and I only keep about 6 cookies
that I use.

"Do not save encrypted pages to disk" selected in Tools

Double checked - it remains unchecked.

I'm frustrated seeing that one in all the unresolved
posts. Are you kidding? That's the very first thing
most of us do, and for some reason, I keep doing it,
thinking maybe it will help, someday. I have nothing
left to delete.

There are NO MORE Temp files anymore!

Just thought of one other clue...
Shortly after the IE6 updates, when right click on a
link, I can no longer 'save target as'... I can
only 'open in new window.'

I didn't think too much about it b/c I keep reading more
security stuff, and occasionally tighten my security
settings. But the update was the last set of changes
that I made ...

.... besides upgrading my AVG6 to AVG7.

First...here's a possible fix for your followup
post about "Save Target As"...

===
Images only save as "untitled Bitmap .bmp",
whether right click, or image toolbar.
=========================================
Did you carefully read the following article:

MSPaint *is* the default image editor in WinXP...

Read the following instructions and see if they
address the issue you are describing:

BTW...the tutorial is for Picture It! 9 but for PSP7
or any other image editor...just insert the proper
path.

How to open the selected image in PI9 when
clicking the Edit button on the Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer screen.

IMPORTANT: This message contains information
about modifying the registry. Before you modify the
registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that
you understand how to restore the registry if a problem
occurs. For information about how to back up, restore,
and edit the registry, click the following link to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Information About Editing the Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256986#Topic2

===========================================

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without the
quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

In the Data column you should see the following string:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will see
your current default)

Replace the string with the following path (including the quotes).

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 9\pi.exe" "%1"

To replace the string...

Left click "default" to select it.

Go to...Edit / Modify...

In the "Edit String" field...

Copy/Paste the following:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 9\pi.exe" "%1"

Left click...OK.

(this assumes your path is the same as mine)

Now, your images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if you left click the Edit button...Picture It! 9 opens.

Good luck.

Well, that was sure easy to fix, thanks. Now, if I could
only fix my larger problem. And from reading the
threads, it appears that many XP users are having the
same problems.

MS should take a closer look at this.

I looked at that article again, and am not going
to 'Visual Basic' anything. I'm regedit shy, but will
use it if I'm sure about what I'm doing. So skip this
article.

Okay, I did, and I removed everything from the Downloaded
Programs folder, except Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2,
which could not be completely removed. No change so far.

Just for clarification...lets review the issue
once again.

#1)
If you right click an image on the internet...your
only *Save As* choice is *.bmp*...correct? This
occurs on any and all web pages?

#2)
You want your image files to open in PSP7
when you open a folder and left click an image
file? (In other words...bypassing...Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer)?

Or...

You want your images to open in Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer and a selected image will open
in PSP7 when you click the "Edit" button?

Plus, IE will not read the picture properties,
description, or name of photo, so that it defaults
to 'untitled'.

==================================
First...let me say...if the following instructions
do not make an improvement...I cannot solve
the problem. You may have a corrupted user
account or you may even need to reinstall
Windows.

OK...and you have carefully tried all the options
in the following KB article? Read it once more
just to be sure.

(810978) Internet Explorer Saves Images As
Bitmaps (.bmp Files
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810978

Here's something else to try...

Open a folder and go to...Tools / Folder Options /
View tab...

At "Hidden Files and Folders" tick the
"Show Hidden Files and Folders" radio button...
Now..click...Apply / OK...

Next...right click your start button and from the
menu...choose...Explore. If you do not see your
File tree in the left pane...click the Folders button
on your tool bar.

Go to...C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files...

Open the Temporary Internet Files folder and
delete *everything* in it. With the folder open...
go to...Edit / Select All...with all files in the folder
highlighted...go to...File / Delete.

Next...go to...Start / Programs / Accessories /
System Tools / Disk Cleanup...run the tool...
All Options.

Here's some info on the DiskCleanup Tool...

(310312) Description of the Disk Cleanup
Tool in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310312

Now try to save a file from the net.
==================================
#2)
You want your image files to open in PSP7
when you open a folder and left click an image
file? (In other words...bypassing...Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer)?

Yes.
==================================
Right click an image file...jpg for example...
from the menu...choose Properties...
on the General tab...left click the "Change" button.

Select PSP7 from the list and left click...
OK / Apply / OK...

Now if you double left click an image file it
should open in PSP7.

That's all I have...good luck.
