Hi,

I'm having problems reading any cd in any of my drives. I
have a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM connected. When I insert any CD
in either drive and try to open it with explorer. I get a
blank listing. Also the CD does not get mounted because I
can't see the label in 'My Computer'.

What is interesting is that if I reboot while the CD's are
in the drives. I can list them, but if I remove the cd and
put it back in the cd-drive, I get the blank listing error.
The problem seems to have affected my floppy drive as
well. When I try to read a floppy, I get a 'disk not
formatted' error.

does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be and
what I can do to reslove it.
I have tried to repair the XP installation to no avail.

regards.

K...if I understand this correct, when you said that you
get a blank reading, it's because you have rebooted the
system while the CD is in the tray. And get a blank
reading when you insert a CD after reboot.
Sounds like you don't have the right drivers for your CD
& DVD Drives. Going through Windows Update might help
you, but if it fails, then go to the manufacturer's web
site and get the latest drivers from them.
If it is a progressive problem where one by one your
drives are failing, then you might have a more serious
problem. I would like to say that you have the same
problem on your floppy drive, but floppies have been
around for so long that it's quite difficult to make them
fail with wrong drivers.
From your error message on the floppies, let me just ask
this, were your floppies preformatted when you bought
them? Almost all floppies come now preformatted, but you
can still find the without format.

Reinstalling updated drivers for both drives is probably
your best bet. If that doesn't work you might need to
install the controllers themselves, which is done the
same way as the drivers.

A quick way of checking what migh be wrong is by going...
Start/Control Panel/System
Then in the System box go to the Hardware tab
And click on the Device Manager button

Once in there, expand your devices, the + sign like in
explorer. If any of the cascading information has a
yellow warning sign, then it means that driver or
controller is not set up properly
