The dwwin.exe at shutdown problem

I've read a bit about this problem but not found anything that helps me.
Most of the problems that people have had have related to a gamepad of some
sorts, Logitech products and Norton products.

I have neither of the first two and I have had Norton Utilities since I got
the computer but the problem hasn't been happening since I got the computer,
however there is of late an error that appears behind the dwwin.exe error
that relates to Norton System Doctor. I haven't been able to read it
properly because of the dwwin.exe error being in front of it.

Looking in the event viewer the only application that I see that is hanging
is iexplore.exe.

Another problem that I saw mentioned but no solution given for was users
with Window Blinds, which I have. I'd rather not uninstall it, as silly as
it sounds I like being able to change the theme on the computer. :)

I hope I'm making some sense with this and maybe someone here can help me
out in fixing the problem.

Thanks. :)

Thanks for your input Nic.

I've searched for hours concerning this quirk since I
posted my first message here and still haven't found a
solution. Different things seem to work for different
people. The only thing that I have found that's common
with many other posts is Norton Anti-Virus. I don't have
a game pad, any Logitech products, Norton Utilities or
the Blinds program you mentioned. The most extensive
discussion I've found is at "Annoyances.org."

Here's another site with quite a large discussion on
dwwin.exe.

It's become fairly obviou that a Windows XP patch has
something to do with it. People with a Gravis Gamepad or
a Norton product seem to be most affected. One message I
read, the person said they'd talked to Symantec about it
but the company denied that Norton had anything to do
with it. Another person said they had the solution in
German. Here's part of that post incase anyone reading
this can translate and make it work.

With the following tips the problem is solved. You may
download the articles as follows:

(It's in german but referring to Microsoft Newsgroup, so
if there are any translation
problems you find there the original english one (i hope
so).

On WinXP Prof., german version, I did it in the way
discribed in theses articles
(first the german, than the english) an the problem is
solved.

I'm disappointed that Microsoft hasn't addressed this
problem in their knowledge base. More and more people are
being affected. Again, if anyone has any ideas please
post them here or email me. As always I would welcome any
help!

I'm really peeved about it too. I don't use Norton AV so I know that's not
the problem. The only thing that I found that hangs is iexplore.exe but
that doesn't make anysense to me because the error that appears behind the
dwwin.exe error is a Norton product. My husband shut down the pc last night
and it didn't happen but quite frankly I don't belive that means its going
to stop. I'm only grateful that the error doesn't do any damage to the pc
itself.

I don't normally read this particular NG but one of the places that I was
reading about the problem suggested posting to this particular NG. I would
think that being an MS NG that they would realise this is a problem for
quite a few people and put something in their knowledge base.

I had already looked through the links that you suggested but I will do so
again and see what happens.

Thanks Dick for you response, I was really suprised that nobody else had
responded to this problem.
