I receive the error "the disk in drive A is not
formatted. Do you want to format it now?" with any
floppy disk that I insert in the drive. These floppy
have data on them and you can retrieve the data with ease
on other computers.
I have since purchased two brand new floppy disks. I
have reinstalled the floppy disk controllers and drivers.
The mother board is an MSI k7t turbo2 with a via kt133a
chipset. There are no other known issues on this
computer other than this.

please help!!!

buy a cdrw- floppys are useless because no one seems to know how to calibate
the heads before they ship them. also the media is unstable and 650mb vs.
1.43mb, and a cdrw burner cost <= to a floppy drive and a cdrw disc is less
than a floppy.

My personal experience was, I installed XP and had the same problem as you.
I tried every suggestion I could find, including changing floppy drives 3 or
4 times. Nothing helped. I have come to the conclusion that some XP disks
have faulty floppy drivers, as, some people have no problem with floppies
and others do. I have found information that this problem is recognized and
is supposed to be addressed in SP2.

I was able to resolve the problem on my machine by installing the 3-mode
driver that you can find from the following link. The article is rather
wordy and the instructions are difficult to follow but, it worked for me.

Upgraded to XP a few months ago, had to upgrade a lot of stuff in the
process, but never looked at the floppy drive. Finally, the other day had
occasion to use it and it won't work. When I try to access a floppy, I get
the message

Thanx for the link. Its' enlightening. I'ce been having this problem on my presario 2500 laptop for weeks
What's worst is that I've been trying to get through to tech support at compaq-a waste of time

I haven't installed the driver yet or tried installing SP2(I'll try that first). Thank you for your research efforts!
