The disappearing Vista Mail Contacts

G

Guest

I have noticed that if I haven't used a contact in an email for some time it
won't appear in the "To:" field when you hit Create Mail and try to use the
short method of typing in the first initial of the name you want. EG, if 2
weeks ago I entered "J" it would bring up contacts beginning with "J", but
now some of them have "disappeared".

I can get them if I go into Windows Contacts, edit the email address and
then copy and paste the address into the mail message but that's long-winded
and a bit of a bummer.

Is there some flag I can activate to hold on to any contacts I enter
one-time so I don't have to go through all this nonsense time after time?
Any help appreciated.

Windows Mail only remembers about 29 names in the auto-complete. And the
auto-complete doesn't always work correctly.

Sorry, bit of an old timer here - what is auto-complete and what is Windows
Live Mail?

I may have Live Mail somewhere but what would happen to all my msg folders &
contacts if I moved.

Do remember you are speaking to one of the "cat sat on the mat" computing
newcomers.

My remark about auto-complete was in response to "mcshumper"
who described what happens when auto-complete doesn't work
like it should. When you type the first few letters of a recipient's name
or email address, it should automatically complete that entry.

Windows Live Mail is described in the URL link I included. Basically,
it is a standalone email program like Windows Mail, with the added
benefit of newer features, bug fixes, and Hotmail access.
When you install Windows Live Mail, it automatically imports your
accounts, settings, folders and saved emails from Windows Mail.
You may have to tell it to import contacts, but that is easily done.

Once again, many thanks for your patience.

I take it Vista Mail is a basic email package ? It just seems strange to me
that Microsoft would put such a pig's ear of a program on its flagship
operating system. Or was this so that users could choose their own email
package?

If I may guess what Microsoft's intention was, I would say that
they didn't want to put too many features in the basic email program,
so as not to undercut sales of Outlook. That's certainly an
understandable position for a 'for-profit' organization to take.

Aaah, you've hit the nub of the matter! Is there going to be an OUTLOOK for
Vista or should I bite at the cherry that is Live Messenger Hotmail thingy?

If I do go the Hotmail thingy route do I keep my email address or do I have
to change?

Outlook 2003 and later versions work well with Vista.

Windows Live Hotmail works only with Hotmail/MSN email
accounts, and it won't handle POP mail.

You should try Windows Live Mail, since it handles both
POP accounts (like Windows Mail) and also supports
Hotmail/MSN accounts. You can download it here:
