For the past several months I have been logging on and my
printer has just disappeared. I have reinstalled it many
times. Finally I downloaded the latest printer and
driver for XP2000 and it seemed to fix it. However,
since then, several weeks ago, it has disappeared once,
and I frequently get "problem communicating with the
printer", and then it decides to print when I try to
cancel the job. Can you tell me what to check? Very
frustrating. Thank you.

If it's connected via USB port, it's probably the mysterious disappearing
USB port that's causing the printer to disappear.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties. From the Hardware Tab,
select Device Manager. Scroll down until you see the USB Controllers....
click on the + to expand the tree..... click on each entry for each Root Hub
in turn.... then on the Power Management tab.... ensure that the option to
turn off power when not in use is UNCHECKED.

Is it perhaps not engaging in its disappearing act now?

Cari: I've done what you said; it may take a week or so
of constant log-ons to see if the printer disappears
again, but THANK YOU THANK YOU for giving me this
direction. All the power management tabs were indeed
CHECKED, so I unchecked all of them on the root hubs, and
God Bless you for turning me onto this tool. I am a
neophyte in dissecting and fixing my own computer (a few
months ago I decided to learn to master this thing in
addition to just using it), and I've got a guy at work
who has been helping me with tips. Yours was excellent,
and I am very grateful for the information and the added
empowerment that comes with it. You take care, and
thanks again. --Paul
