The Disappearing Dial-Up Problem

Bryan .

Hi all.

I'm having a problem that seems to be quite common with
Windows XP, but the fixes and workarounds vary widely -
perhaps someone here knows something new? The problem I'm
experiencing is the one where the Dial-Up connection in
Network Connections has disappeared - but of course it is
still there, any still works if Internet Explorer et al.
is opened. Any new dial-up connections disappear shortly
after creation.

While at this point the problem is simply a nuisance,
being unable to sign-off easily and unable to make the
connection icon appear in the Notification area, I'd much
like to have the error resolved.

The machine is a brand new Alienware, sporting Windows XP
w/SP1 on delivery. I've read that the problem can crop up
as a result of using System Restore, but in my case, I
used System Restore in an attempt to _resolve_ the problem.
Also, the Advanced Tab of the connections (any one that is
newly created and then disappears) displays an error
message saying that the Advanced tab is not available,
possibly due to a corrupted WMI file (or something to that
effect).

Deleting the Rasman 25 & 26 registry keys hasn't worked,
nor has disabling any 1394 device (just a few of the
suggested work arounds). I'd appreciate any light that can
be shed on this rather annoying issue. Let me know if I
can supply any more information. Thanks!

Until you get it working, running rasphone.exe will help you disconnect.

The WMI problem is probably unrelated.

Post the results of typing the following commands at a command line

sc queryex netman
sc queryex rasman

Sorry, the Rasman Type should be 20, not 120...

Those seem OK. Do you have any icons in your Network Connections Folder.
Any LAN/1394 cards that should be there but aren't?

Ken,

The only icon showing in Network Connections is the Intel
Pro/1000 CE Network Connection (not plugged in).

Device Manager shows this card, as well as a 1394 Net
Adapter (that does not appear in Network Connections).
