The death of music TV channels in UK - but not Europe?

For those of us who are as old as I am (or older, sorry!), you might remember a magical thing called MTV - “Music Television”.

It’s been a running joke for many years that “MTV doesn’t play music anymore”, but that only became true in 2026. MTV had dedicated music channels in Europe and the UK, until 31 Dec 2025. Before this date, we had:
  • MTV Music
  • MTV Live (Virgin Media only)
  • Club MTV
  • MTV 80s
  • MTV 90s

Just before 0600 UTC on 31 Dec 2025, MTV Music played their final music video, which was The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star.

And just like that, the last remaining music channels that were actually decent died in the UK.

But in Continental Europe, this isn’t the case. There’s still locally operated music channels in European countries that are thriving. Many of these broadcast in HD, without commercials! Some of them even have live DJ mixes. We never got any of these luxuries in the UK, at least as far as I can remember.

I want to do a research project on music channel programming across Europe. So I ask, what music channels do you have left? To be clear, this is referring to linear TV music channels, streaming or FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) that simply play media from YouTube/VEVO don’t count. IPTV channels do count if their content is linear.

I’m mostly targeting non-UK music channels, as the UK ones are functionally extinct. There’s a handful of UK satellite music channels left such as “NOW” and “That’s (cr*p) TV”. But I’m not considering them due to disgusting audio/video quality and low effort programming. These deserved to close, yet they hang around like a bad smell.

Any other MTV related memories (music programming only) are welcome.

Update on this:

That’s TV have abruptly announced that their linear music channels will close on 28 Feb 2026. I must have offended them too much. Sorry, not sorry.

This leaves NOW Music (UMG) as the only remaining UK music channels. I don’t expect they will last much longer either.
