I built this computer about a year ago. It had no parallel port so I was
unable to install the printer I had at the time as it was older and P-port
only. I just bought a new combo printer (Canon MX330) that is USB only and
tried to install it. I received the following message:

Cannot Install Hardware.
An Error Occurred During theInstallation of the Device:
The data is invalid

As a part of TS with canon I tried using msconfig to do a base boot with no
success. I was able to install the drivers and print from another XP machine
and a vista laptop. That ended TS from canon. The problem is with something
in my machine.

After a search of the web I tried the instructions in the following KB's
with no success:
kb810882
kb841567 (changed both the permissions in the KB and the ones that seemed
more applicable to my situation)

In the process of additional trouble shooting I removed all other USB
devices on from the computer and uninstalled all USB controllers from the
device manager, restarted windows and the controllers reinstalled themselves.
But, now I cannot reinstall any of the other USB devices that were installed
and working just fine before I started this apparently ill advised course.

For additional TS I also set the setupapi.log file to verbose but I don't
have the expertise to decipher it and diagnose the problem. I can see the
points where it fails and makes several retries to retrieve driver data but
it's beyond my pay grade what is happening under the hood. Here is the header
and the first few failed attempts to install device drivers:

Done that already. And, every other variation on that theme I could think of.

Board drivers and BIOS are the latest.

The missing file that the log refers to is (usbccgp.sys). I found it in the
service pack files folder and nowhere else on the computer. What I need to
know is did service pack 3 remove this file from the system32 folder (just
out of curiosity) and can I safely put it back in the system32 folder, as
that is the file that it keeps gagging on and it is looking for it in the
system32 folder.

Thank you

I have a usbccgp.sys installed on my system. It is in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

Holding my mouse over the icon, it says

USB Common Class Generic Parent Driver

In a quick search, this article gives some idea what usbccgp is supposed to do.
It helps handle USB composite devices, of which your printer might be one.
So it would seem to be important.

Hello Paul

Thanks for the reply.

I've already read that one and some others about the file. So I understand
what it does.

Everything I've read so far says that it should be in the system32 folder
and I'm assuming that it was there on my machine too at some point in the
past as I used to have no issues with installing USB devices. This is the
first time that I've tried to install a USB device since SP3 hence my
suspicion that SP3 might have removed it.

What I need to know is if it is safe to reinstall it to the system32 folder.
If if was removed for security reasons then I need to know how to proceed to
restore USB functionality to my machine.

Thanks

David

I've gleaned some additional info about this file that is also giving me pause.

Here is the file versions for SP2 and SP3:
Windows XP with SP2, x86-based versions

File name File version File size Date Time Platform
Usbccgp.sys 5.1.2600.3356 32,384 22-Apr-2008 09:12 x86

Windows XP with SP3, x86-based versions

File name File version File size Date Time Platform
Usbccgp.sys 5.1.2600.5585 32,384 22-Apr-2008 13:09 x86

Here is the file versions for the only instance of teh file that I can find
on my machine (in the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder):

5.1.2600.5512 32,768 bytes April 13, 2008, 11:45:39 AM

So, that file doesn't match what I should have with SP3 or the old one for
PS2.

So, that file doesn't match what I should have with SP3 or the old one for
PS2.

Mine is

Size: 32,128 bytes

Size on disk: 32,768 bytes

File Version: 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2108)

Modified: April 14, 2008 12:15:40 AM

If I unpack the one from the i386 folder I keep on
a separate partition, I get the same thing. The file
exists as D:\i386\USBCCGP.SY_ , a compressed file that
can be extracted with 7ZIP. It is also in D:\I386\SP3.CAB
as a file, and gives the same file. So my backup copies
and the one in the drivers folder, are the same.

The MD5SUM of the file is

173f317ce0db8e21322e71b7e60a27e8

If you want to verify yours, there is a command prompt version here.
I use an MD5SUM program I got elsewhere, and the result is the same.

"fciv.exe"

Thanks for the help Paul

I extracted the usbccgp.sys from my SP3 executable and placed it in the
system32\drivers folder and redid the install of the printer. Wahlah.
Painless install.

Thanks

David
