the CTRL and SHIFT keys don't work to select multiple files

On my new Dell Latitude D600 notebook running XP pro, the CTRL and SHIFT keys don't work to select multiple files
Does anyone know what could be wrong?
 
Are you sure you are not referring to CTRL A ?

CTRL A works to select all
I can't select multiple files while holding down the CTRL or SHIFT keys
 
The issue was that I normally selected multiple files (in Windows Explorer, for example) by holding down the CTRL or SHIFT key and tapping or dragging via the mouse touchpad. This did not work with my new notebook

The problem was resolved by unchecking the "tap off when typing" option on the "touch pad" tab of of "mouse properties" in the control panel
