the bug in FP 2003

Wally S

When you try to open a page, sometimes you get a message like this one:
"Cannot open c:\documents and settings\wally\local settings\temporary
internet files\FrontPage TempDir\05bd93ac.htm" Well, it's no wonder it
cannot find the file because the "FrontPage Tempdir" folder does not exist.

It is annoying, like toast crumbs in the bed. Sometimes it will start
happening with every page, and the only thing I can do is close FP and open
it again. I keep hearing that Microsoft has been told about it, but I
wonder, Are they working on it? This software has been out for six months. I
can't believe they have not been able to solve the problem in this time.

It seems to have something to do with "include" pages. Does anyone know if
it would solve the problem to stop using "include" pages?

The directory is there, however it is "super" hidden.

Make sure that you search for and deleted the system/hidden .web file frequently.

When you get the error, keep clicking okay (takes about 3 times) then click
refresh. Works for me.

Wally:
You can see and delete the files in c:\documents and settings\wally\local
settings\temporary internet files\FrontPage TempDir\ with a 3rd party
product - try Total Commander.

It doesn't always work. Sometimes the include files still don't get loaded,
so I am afraid that if I work on the page and then save it, it may get
messed up.

Thanks,

Wally:
Click OK until the error message stops appearing, then switch to Code View,
then back to Design View, and then click View Refresh. All of your includes
*should* all load normally.

Hi Kathleen,

I got it. Am I right in assuming that when I am in FP and this problem
starts, I can just make sure that all my open pages have been saved and then
delete everying in the FP TempDir directory?

Thanks,

Wally S

Yes. To be safe, after you've saved all your changes, I would close the web
and then delete all the files in the FrontPage TempDir folder.

What you might also find interesting is to run Total Commander (with that
folder open) and FrontPage at the same time, and watch the files get created
and then disappear as you work in FrontPage.
