The application area of the taskbar

hi, recently my application area of the taskbar is not showing any of
the programs i'm running of the internet explorer windows,, the quick
launch is present and the language bar also is there on the right side,
i tried removing the quick launch and the language bar but when i do so
the whole task bar hides down although i did not set it to hide
automatically... so if anyone knows what can solve this problem plz
advise.
ps. i'm running windows xp pro.
