That user name has already been tried

We have a small network. One windows 2000 server, and several desktops. We
always shut everything down at night. Quite often people will start up their
desktops, log into the domain before the server is started. Once that
happens the only way to access resources (printers, etc.) on the server is to
log off and on again. Most annoying if you already have a lot of windows
open. The workstations are all Win XP. You get the "that user name has
already been tried" message so you can't log in. Even using a different
valid user name won't work. What can I do??

Don't turn off the server at night?
Set the server (via BIOS setting) to power on at a given time in the morning
before people arrive?

I figured that one out already, but that doesn't solve the problem. Is there
a way to get XP to recheck for domain controllers once it's decided that it
can't find one. If not, there should be.

Wait until the server has been turned on before logging in. (And why
is it being shut down, anyway? That's just plain bad for it.)

No.

If not, there should be.

Why?
