That dreaded black desktop!

I'm a bit stuck here. I've attempted to install Vista Beta 2 as an upgrade to
XP.
I went through a few blue screens during the final part of the installation
(something about a bad_pool_call I think). Anyway, I've ended up at that
dreaded black desktop, with the Vista blurb down the bottom right and a
moveable mouse pointer.

I've read in a lot of these posts that it's most likely video-related, but
how do I fix whatever's wrong now that I have the black desktop in *both*
Normal and Safe modes?!

I've left it ruinning for at least 10 minutes in each mode but it just sits
there.
Help!

Can't remove the video card as it's a laptop - GeForce Go 6600 128Mb RAM.
Am I likely to run into any problems with this video chip on a complete
reinstall?
