That black art of the user profile

When boot up it takes an age to load profile. When I power down it takes an
age to save user profile.
When I took this up with our support guy he pointed out that my user profile
was rather large (about 8Gb) and I needed to delete some zip files from the
MyDocuments folder. I did this and it solved the problem.

But I would like a little understanding of why it was necessary and why it
worked. I cannot understand why the operating system would have to process
any information in a zip file, whereever it is located on the hard disk.
Sure, it might need to take note of the presence of the file and perhaps of
its size. But it should take no longer to do that for a 4Gb file than for a
1Kb file. At least so I should have expected being just an end user.

Any enlightenment out there? Thanks. Just out of interest, not requiring a
problem to be solved now.

By default XP treats .zip files as compressed folders. It is treating the
..zip files as folders within My Documents.

Thanks. I know I am being dense, but why should the presence of a (large)
compressed folder in My Documents affect the bootup time?

I believe Windows checks all folders in My Documents and caches all the file
names one folder deep. I could be wrong but I remember this from along time
ago when I was researching a different problem. I can't find any references
to back up my memory though. I could be way out in left field :-)
