Thanks, Cliff.

Basically what you're saying is that 2003 can't take control directly
over from NT4, NT4 must first be upgraded to 2003.

Are there any good books on this that list DETAILED instructions on the
process of migrating from NT to 2000/2003? Thanks in advance.

There is a detailed list of instructions on the Microsoft Web Site.
Sorry, I no longer have the link, but if you search around, you should
be able to find the article. Or someone here may know it.

The scenario that I describe is the 'upgrade' scenario. There is also a
'migration' scenario where you create a new 2003 AD Domain alongside the
NT4 one and use tools (ADMT) to migrate accounts and so on to the new
Domain.

You are correct when you say "2003 can't take control directly over from
NT4, NT4 must first be upgraded to 2003". This is basically because the
security model is totally different. The format and location of the
security information is so different that inter-relations between the
two security system would be very difficult. The upgrade between
versions of AD *may* be easier in the future, though!

Cheers,

Cliff
