Debra

Just a note to everyone who has ever, (or never), installed Lavasoft
Ad-Aware. I wasn't familiar with it. Now that I am, and have it running, it
was one of the best things I could do for this "pretty baby of mine." I'm
big on giving credit where credit is due.

P.S. Thanks, Michael S. Everything is running s-m-o-o-t-h now.

Spybot Search and Destroy is very thorough. The only reason I don't usually
recommend it is because it can be very aggressive and as such can be a bit
confusing to less experienced users.

Good point Michael, best to start with the easier
application. Once the user gains more experience, they
may wish to install Spybot.

Yes, I certainly recommend it to those with the experience to understand
what Spybot might turn up.:-)

I've seen some real flame wars break out on some boards over this as it
seems some of Spybot's adherents don't believe it can be overly aggressive
or they pass it off with a reminder there's an undo button.

All well and good, Ad Aware has an undo as well but if you suddenly find you
cannot boot the system, undo has been undone!:-) I've rarely seen anything
in Ad Aware that would cause that, not sure I've seen it in Spybot either
but given what it turns up sometimes, it makes cautious!

I've been lucky I haven't had a problem with Ad-aware or
Spybot. Spybot certainly picks up more registry entries
which you have to examine before deletion just to be safe
unless you know it is for sure spyware. It tells you what
the entries are normally but this would be confusing to a
basic user. Although I have installed both Ad-aware and
Spybot on 3 friend's computers (novices), I advise them
not to use Spybot but just use Ad-aware and leave Spybot
to me when I'm in attendance.

For the new user/beginner, I agree Ad-aware is the best
and easy to use.

There is always the option of creating a manual system
restore point prior to using such spyware removal
software as a precaution for those a little unsure.

In future on basics, new user and accessibility NGs I'll
restrict my answers to Ad-Aware and not mention Spybot.

Thank's for you input - I've enjoyed the chat.
