Anyone seen the news, something like a 2.3metre tidal surge is expected tonight, due to that, they are closing the Thames Barriers at 8PM.

It's got to be extreme for that action to be taken, as if I remember correctly, it stops free passage through that part of the Thames.

That's not far at all from me, The Thames Barrier.

I just drove home from Orpington and the weather was atrocious. It was dark by 4pm and visibility was very poor because of near torrential rain.

It's not often they close the barrier, must be a huge swell they're expecting.

I just saw the brit movie 'Flood' just released on DVD and starring Robert Carlyle...about how high tidal activity combined with extreme wind etc overpowers the Thames Barrier and hits Central London...very timely (actually a very good movie as well)...glad i don't live there (but I am up in London next weekend!:( )

Just going to post Chris..
Gordon Brown has been called to a cobra meeting...sorry if this is already posted..but i,ve seen a mini tornado tonight so anythings possible.

Aye. I didn't mention in earlier post that whilst I was driving, wind was very strong, actually causing my car (which is quite heavy) to be buffetted across the road. I slowed down from 50 to about 35 on main dual carriageway.

The autumn leaves were being blown up and gusting around in great big clouds, making visibility even more difficult.

Puddles/ponds on main road were at some places about 600mm/2ft deep

1nteger: London won't flood, I don't think we've seen rowing boats in the High Street since the floods in Lewisham around '62. Which, actually, was quite freaky I guess.

Do tell!

It was about 1.30 pm yesterday afternoon, I was sitting using the PC in the kitchen when the wind and hail went ballistic, i had my camera on the table , but there was no way i could go outside with it , then i saw a white mass whizz past the consevatory window. The wind was unreal .

That would freak you out!
Would love to have seen the piccys if you'd been able to film it
But I think I'll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again nevertheless

Lucky Escape

The Country escaped this time...well done the Agencys that patrolled it..came within a metre of devastation.
Flood defences save lives and we know the "East side" is more vulnerable , so lets hope the Government of the future recognises the fact and takes all the precautionary measures to boot ..

:)
