HI

I am trying to perform a remote Installation using RIS. I
have a 3com card in the client machine that is listed on
the Microsoft web site. I have created a boot disk using
RFBG.exe but when it tries to boot I get this error
message: No reply from a TFTP server. I have tried
downloading a third party TFTP server but have had no joy.

I have looked on the support.microsoft site but there is
very little help.

Any Ideas.

Thanks

Hi Martin

Yes. DHCP, DNS and Active Directory are running on the
network. I have verified that the RIS server is running
and that it will service client requests.

It seems to find an IP address ok but then looks for a
TFTP server. It does not even mention this in the MCSE
books for setting up RIS

Is the client PC on the same segment as the RIS server or is it crossing
segments? If it is crossing segments try moving the client PC to the same
segment as the RIS server.

Make sure the Respond to client computer requesting service setting is
checked in the properties of the RIS server. If this setting is not enabled,
the server does not respond to any client requests

If the Do not respond to unknown client computers setting in the properties
of the RIS server is checked, the server only answers clients with computer
account objects in Active Directory

Do a start>Run>RISETUP -CHECK and post the result.

Check the event logon the RIS Server for error messages about DHCP, DNS,
TFTPD, or BINLSVC.

Has the server been authorized in Active Directory?

Can you get a successful RIS with te F12 Boot from network start?

Hi Scott.

The Ris server is set to respond to client requests.

I will check the Event log when I get in from work and let
you know the result. When you say has the RIS server been
authorised in Active Directory. I assume it has as the RIS
server is also the domian controller with AD.

Thanks

Rob

Open the DHCP snap in and choose "manage authorized servers">authorize
server>add ip address of the server. If the DC server is also a working
DHCP server then it is already authorized. I am also waiting for the
response to the rest of my questions. Thanks.

Just a silly thought -

I will assume you've:
1) Rebooted and tested
2) Confirmed the TFTP Service is running
3) Tried to TFTP to the server from another client {outside of RIS}
tftp servername PUT FILENAME.TXT

What are these results?

I'll post my original questions again, we have ruled out the DHCP/authorized
part.

Hi Guys

Right.

Have checked the ris server with the risetup -check

It says there were no errors detected.

The respond to client requests box is checked.

I have managed to send a file using the TFTP servername
Put command it said that the transfer was successful

I have looked in the services window and I cannot find
the service but i assumu it must be running as it was
able to send the file using tftp

There are no error messages in the event log regarding
DNS DHCP TFTPD or BINLSVC

When you ask if i can get a successful boot with the F12
boot I am not sure what you mean? I have tried pressing
F12 as it boots but nothing happens.

Thanks

Rob

Sounds like a nic issue, try the 3Com RIS boot floppy. The utility can be
had from here:

http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/result.jsp?selected=5&sort=effdt&order=desc&sku=3CMBA-D

(copy the URL into your browser if it breaks, it ends with "3CMBA-D").

Hitting the F12 key usually causes your computer to try a PXE boot. Your
BIOS may have a different key to do that or it may not be supported on your
BIOS/NIC). You may also want to update the BIOS on the NIC to be a later
version of PXE.

Hi Scott

I am nearly there. The boot disk works up to a point.
I press F12 to boot. It then goes through the set up
process. The files are then copied from the server.
It then asks if there is a boot floppy in the drive to
remove it and then it re boots.Everything up to this
point seems to work fine. However, the screen then hangs
with a flashing cursor in the top left hand part if the
screen.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Rob

Well you are very close.

You may need to update the PXE rom on the nic to a later version since this
appears to be an older computer. Try using another client to see if you can
isolate the problem.

Well, short of copying the admin's app data files to the "all users" app
data folder I don't have any ideas except to call the software manufacturer
and ask about the problem.
