I have a small number of forty year old Black & White photos that I wish to
scan and I am finding that the resulting image is covered in white specs.

I have tried scanning using the descreen but it has no effect.

The photos are in excellent condition.

Any suggestions?

Try cleaning your scanner glass with a
dry, dust free wipe before scanning and
also carefully wipe off the pictures before
placing them on the glass.

Colleagues tell me they are very impressed with taking a digital image
rather than a scan.

A good fixed photographic system to keep the source image in good
subdued light (no reflections) with a securely fixed camera seems to
produce surprisingly good results.
