Here is a text editor which FINALLY meets my wishes and expectations!

I am ecstatic!! Over the past couple days I have been following the thread
on text editors, but I need look no further ...

PSPAD is free. PSPAD does what I have always wanted.

It BLOCK highlights .. not merely line highlights like any humdrum editor.

It REFORMATS text to fit whatever character line length you choose ...
AND ... those line lengths stay put!! That's important. You can get any
old run-of-the-mill text editor or word-processor (even MS Word) to fit
within
two margins. But, just try saving that document, and then opening it up in
a different editor. Chances are ... back to the original line lengths or
even a single humongous long line of countless thousands of characters. No
so
after you have reformatted it with PSPAD, which removes carriage returns
and replaces them where you want them.

Ta-Dah!

And another big plus - spellchecker dictionaries in several languages,
downloadable from the same page.

The author provides the no-install version as a cab file. I can't
extract it in either Filzip or Ultimate Zip. I wish he had provided it
in zip format.

Any ideas on this?

Or, freeware to extract cab files?

The install file is a self extracting zip "type" file. It doesn't seem
to be PK compatible. The installer creates the subdirectories at the
location that you choose and decompresses the files into the proper
subdirectories. If it were a regular .zip file and the user did not
elect to recurse into subdirectories everything would be dumped into a
single directory and the install would be useless. I think the author
is trying to prevent this problem in using a SFX program.

I don't think there is any harm in SFX over a regular .zip file, other
than a bit of extra overhead in the download size.

I've got Power Archiver 6.0, it will open CAB files.

I have now that I've downloaded the .cab :-)
I suspect UZ is buggy, and has problems with .cab files. The archive is
fine but UZ produces an error when I run "Test". However, if I click
Extract all files to wherever, they all fall out no problem. Was it
"Test" that you ran?

BTW, .cab size is 1550946 bytes.

I dunno if the freeware PowerDesk 5 includes support of .CAB files, but
the cmml one does. Just a suggestion to try the freeware version.

I downloaded the cab file again, ran UZ again, Extract- got "cabinet
error", Test got similar error message. The file size I see is
1,557,052 bytes, slightly different than you see.

I tried it with Power Archiver, got similar error message.

I tried the install package, and it is truly the usual MS installer, I
don't install much anymore, and certainly won't install just to test
another text editor.

It is a puzzle that my archivers open the cab archive, but they will not
extract the files. I went on the PsPad forum, and the author said
basically "any archive utility should work"- really?

Any advice at this point?

OK, re: file size, my system reports
1.48MB ( 1,550,946bytes) 1,556,480bytesAllocated/FAT32

Given the difference you observe, I suspect you have a corrupted
download for some reason. I could e-mail you a copy if you give me a
working addy.

Ahoy Mate
Could you kindly bottom post in this news group? Please.

Bottom posting and trimming superfluous text is the preferred
method of replying to posts in a.c.f. and a.c.f.d.

Thank You Very Much :-)

Thanks, Boomer, lots of features but it appears to be a 15 MB install,
way too big on my HD.

I tried to send you an email at Alan <[email protected]>, and it
bounced. What is the correct address?

Well, I don't use my addy on newsgroups, to avoid the spambots. Maybe if
you have a throw away webmail addy I could send it to you there. I
presumed the one in your post header was, like mine, a fake. Otherwise
to alt.binaries.freeware or something.

I understand, assumed that, and yes, mine is also a fake.
Thanks for the help. The PsPad text editor has good features to me, as
it does to you.

Could you zip your working folder copy and post it to
alt.binaries.freeware?
A zip file is much easier for me to work with.

BTW, I have had good luck with Filzip as an archive utility.

Posted up under PSPad at alt.binaries.freeware. Here's hoping :)

It may be the difference in time zones, but I don't see it yet. I can
remember before when alt.binaries.freeware had about 12 messages, now
it's 90% spam.
