Looking for a free text to speech prog.
Found one with funny voices for kids, but it will not accept very much text.
Obviously I can search on Google, but I wondered if anyone could supply a
short cut to help.
Thanks.

'Speakonia' is the best I've found with over 30 voice options to
choose from. You can alter the pitch (timbre) on any of those voices
as well the speed and volume, though it occasionally crashes from what
appears bugs.

All text-to-speech freeware I've tried have bugs except the original
'Read please 2000' which is pretty reliable and is my second
recommendation, though the voice-reading options are 4 to 5, not 30.

I highly recommend you do not use 'Read please 2003' because I found
it buggy as hell (XP). 'Sayz Me' (another) practically wrecked my
system needing a utility repair more than any other freeware I've ever
downloaded, and recommend you stay clear of it. If you can deal with
the occasional crashes and want more voice options than 'Speakonia' is
worth a try, imo.

If anyone knows of text-to-speech freeware better than Speakonia as to
reliability/functionality(options), I'm all ears.

Hope that helps.

CyberBuddy is an entertaining program that will read the clipboard, text
files, pop us with random inspirational messages, etc. It will use any MS
Agent installed and allows for multiple characters. It allows you to change
speaking rate and pitch and even change the character's natural voice. You
can even create your own scripts complete with musical accompaniment.

I used it for awhile but found I didn't want to dedicate 10 megs of RAM to a
system tray program. Also, it wants to phone in for news headlines, stock
quotes etc. Although I turned all these options off it still wanted to phone
in.

Talking Clipboard will read anything copied to the clipboard, either
automatically or as required. It used MS Agents as well. It's always worked
flawlessly for me, but doesn't have many options. It will use any MS Agent
installed as well. I've had it for many years, so can't vouch that the URL
below is still valid.

Lastly there is a terrific program called Karen's Power Toys that uses MS
Agent technology as well. You have to write scripts for it, but your script
can call upon it to read any text files on your puter. You can also change
speaking options via the script but it will work only for that script, if
you understand me. I do believe though that at her site you can get other
programs that will read copied text. She's a former contributor to WinMag
and her site is at:

2nd Speech Center lets you listen to text instead of reading on
screen! It uses 'Text to Speech' technology to synthesize natural
sounding speech from ordinary text. Just copy text to the clipboard or
import from text files and listen as IISC reads it back to you!

2nd Speech Center also allows you to convert text into a MP3/WAV audio
file so you can listen later. Create MP3 files from your email, news
articles, any text you want, download to your portable MP3 player and
off you go!

NOT FREEWARE as far as I can determine from the website.
