Text size keeps changing automatically!

hello there!

i am having a problem with the text size changing,( seemingly of it's own
accord!) .

for example, i make a page in design view and most times -but not always-
when i go into 'preview' the text is either enormous or much smaller!!
obviously, this is wrecking the progress with getting my site up!!!

the only thing i am aware of touching, is the big A and small A up in the
toolbar, when you want to highlight text and make some text bigger than
other, but as far as i understand, that should not make the text different
when one goes into preview.

another thing i have noticed in the last day or two, is that all pages, when
i surf the web using ie, have larger print than usual - like children's first
reading books or books for the partially-sighted, but i have not done
anything to change any functions of the browser, so i am at a loss at how to
solve this problem.

if anyone has any ideas, it would be very much appreciated!

best wishes,

miranda

Hi, Miranda. I can only help with the IE issue... on the toolbar, hit
View-->Text Size. I believe Medium is the default, and this can easily be
changed by accidentally using your wheel mouse and the Ctrl key at the same
time while you're viewing a page. Happens to me all the time.
I just change it back.

Hope it helps!

hello Anne!

thanks very much for your speedy reply and yes, you were spot on re: the
print size of ie!

unfortunately, it has not solved the problem with fp though (i had hopes
that it might) so if anyone else knows, again i would love a bit of advice!!

best wishes from miranda

hello again!

after about 8 hours of just trying things for this problem, i think (?) and
it seems that it has something to do with the 'page encoding' (would not have
found this if Anne hadnot made her post, so thanks again Anne).

The thing is that, although i have 'encoded' my browser to be the same as
the FronPage encoding (so the font is coming roughly the same size) but i do
not know if it is the correct coding i have set it at. How does one know
this? i live in the uk. i am a newbie so i do not even know if it makes any
difference that i live in the uk!!! but the coding i have chosen for my (ie)
browser is 'western Europe (ISO)' and the coding i have chosen in Fp is
'US/western Europe(ISO)'.

any guidance here will be much appreciated,
all the best
miranda

me again!

as soon as i had sent the last post, i just checked the encoding of my
browser again and it had changed to 'unicode(UTF-8)' ??!

any ideas why and what to do to correct?

thank you, Stefan, for responding.

text size is set at 'medium' , but the entry below 'text' which is
'encoding' also seems to be moving around as well. the problem i have is
that i do not know which 'encoding' i should have it set at? (i am in the uk
- i do not know if this is relevant or not.)

should i have the encoding as 'unicode (UTF-8)' or '(western europe
(ISO)' or another .....? and what should i pick in Fp - they are not
exactly the same names, eg. ' US/western europe (ISO)'

the only page i have put up using Fp (don't know what the encoding was for
it, as i put it up before things went very wrong and was not aware then that
'encoding' even existed) is :

http://www.bridale-architectural-antiques.co.uk/Lottie-colours-xxxxx.html

many thanks for your help

Encoding will not affect font-size, it will effect how some characters
(symbols such as the £, non-western characters) are displayed on the
page.
Your page has a few design problems[1], but font-size is not one of
them.

[1] Width - too wide for my 800x600 browser.
Page height - 2000px of mainly blank space.
Empty table cells, which do nothing but collapse in some browsers.
Small text - increasing the font-size cures that without spoiling the
design.
Black on dark blue text in left border - hard to read, especially when
it's so small.
Link to site map is not there.

Thank you very much for your feedback, Ron. it is very useful.

just out of interest, what encoding do most people use or is it best to use?

i would like to ask one othere question. How does one make the windows of
the type that one uses when , from a very small image, when a visitor clicks
on it, an enlarged version of the image 'pops-up'? could you point me in the
right direction of where to find this info?

many thanks again,

In the web page I use ISO-8859-1 for the character set,, as in
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
charset=ISO-8859-1" />
Many others use windows-1252

The charset you use depends on your web pages - some require UTF-8,
especially those written in non-Western languages such as Hebrew or
Chinese, though there are other charactersets that are more
appropriate for those.

As for FrontPage and the browser, if the pages are written in English,
or other European languages, then add those languages to
Tools->Internet Options - Language button in IE, and set FP to
US-Western Europe.

I wrote about empty table cells, which seem to be a "feature" of
layout tables.
I never use layout tables, and never have this problem.
If I use a table cell as a spacer,then I include either a space
character or a transparent image in the cell, which depends on the
size of the spacer required. A space character has a minimum height
and width determined by the font in use, an image can be as small as
1x1 px.

thank you again Ron.

i have another 2 questions:

1. what do you use if you do not use tables?

2. where does one find a 'space character' and a 'transparent image'?

looking forward to your reply

I never use layout tables, and never have this problem.
If I use a table cell as a spacer,then I include either a space
character or a transparent image in the cell, which depends on the
size of the spacer required. A space character has a minimum height
and width determined by the font in use, an image can be as small as
1x1 px.

Many others use windows-1252

The charset you use depends on your web pages - some require UTF-8,
especially those written in non-Western languages such as Hebrew or
Chinese, though there are other charactersets that are more
appropriate for those.

As for FrontPage and the browser, if the pages are written in
English,
or other European languages, then add those languages to
Tools->Internet Options - Language button in IE, and set FP to
US-Western Europe.

i would like to ask one othere question. How does one make the

Encoding will not affect font-size, it will effect how some
characters
(symbols such as the £, non-western characters) are displayed on
the
page.
Your page has a few design problems[1], but font-size is not one
of
them.

[1] Width - too wide for my 800x600 browser.
Page height - 2000px of mainly blank space.
Empty table cells, which do nothing but collapse in some
browsers.
Small text - increasing the font-size cures that without
spoiling
the
design.
Black on dark blue text in left border - hard to read,
especially
when
it's so small.
Link to site map is not there.

I use tables for layout (On the menu, Table->Insert->Table). I do
not use Layout Tables.

A space character is generated by pressing the space bar on the
keyboard. A non-breaking space is generated by pressing the shift key
and space bar together.

A transparent image is a .gif image with a single colour set to be
transparent. Create one in your graphics program, or steal tp.gif
contained in http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/images/tp.zip
