Text Shadow Effect

I am creating a slide, I like have done hundreds of times before. I am using
PowerPoint 2003 on a Vista machine. I have a jpg file as a background and I
am using white fonts and I am trying to put black shadows behind them. After
I highlight my text then I go to the shadow button on the formatting bar and
it is grayed out, why? I have done shadowing in the past with no problem. I
was able to shadow a horizontal line on the same slide. Any ideas?

Thank heavens! Shadowed text lost it's "cool" factor yonks ago. I esp
like it when the shadows fall in different directions -- now that Really
Cool!!!
