Text selection not working or turned off

When I attempt to select a line of text or a paragraph I'm not getting
the right pointing arrow when I move the pointer to the far left. What
do I need to do to turn this feature on?

Please disregard the feature is working, I was looking for an arrow
pointing right, not a right pointing arrow.
 
I'm curious as to what the difference is. Were you looking for a horizontal
arrow (like the one that allows you to select a row in a table) rather than
the angled (NE-pointing) arrow that you actually get?
