I have finally lost the battle and have today installed two Dell PCs
with XP Pro - Dell no longer supply W2K.
They were installed as part of a network and replaced W98 machines.
One of the proud new users called me shortly after the install that
searching from explorer for specific text strings within files was
excruciatingly slow - he does this all the time to find specific Word
documents.
The files are on a server (W2k Server) but the search is within a single
folder containing 1371 Word documents.
In the past this only took a few seconds.
I tried it out and lo-and-behold the two new XP machines took several
minutes while other PCs on the network, lowly W98 and W2K P3 700
included, did the job in about 15 seconds.
These new machines are 3.4GHZ!
Any ideas what is going on and what I can do about it - other than ditch
XP.
Thanks
