Am looking for advice on the expected differences in text quality when
printing with the Canon i850 as compared to the S530D.

They both use the same ink tanks and same number of black ink nozzles
(320) for text, so I would expect similar text quality from both. If
you're concerned about a few reports of poor text on the i850, don't
worry about it. As long as you use any kind of coated paper, even the
cheapest multi-purpose from any office supply store, it will print laser
quality text.

Photo quality is a different story, the i850 is MUCH better, they're not
in the same class, not even close.

That's pretty much what I was worried about, Bill. I've not paid much
attention to photo quality inkjets in the past, but with my first
digicam arriving in approx two weeks [Canon A-70] it's time to hang a
photo capable printer in my 17" iMac at home. As best I can recall,
current thinking when I picked up my Epson 850 some time ago was that
the earlier generation photo quality printers did not perform as well
for text output in an office environment. It sure looks like the text
output differences between general purpose inkjets photo quality inkjets
had diminished in recent times.

The i850 will compliment the A70 camera nicely.

Don't worry about the lack of direct photo printing...a lot of photos
you'll probably want to fine-tune before printing anyway. Remember that
a basic image editing program will enhance those less than perfect
photos quite a bit, something that was harder to do with lab prints.

Why would you want to jam a printer inside your iMac? Won't it be too
crowded in there?

Heh! :)
