text jibberish/missing text

I loose the abitlity to read the headings for Text, Edit, Print etc... on my
tool bar. Drop downs become dashes. Or text in headings & dropdowns look
like Chinese. No offense. Or I get a 1 or 2 wide horizontal bar across the
screen that blocks everything behind it. It makes it hard to work when you
can't read where you are going. Any suggestions?

What happens if you run your cursor over these things? Does normal text
appear?

You mention that the ability is lost - does this mean that on a fresh
startup the menus display correctly and deteriorate after some time has
gone by?

If yes to any of these, this is most likely an issue with your video
adapter. Sometimes fixable with an updated driver (if one is even available
for your hardware) but usually a sign that the display abilities of the
system are overtaxed and/a heat problem.

Start with the easiest: Make sure there is adequate airflow to the case and
that all fans are working.

If the system is overtaxed, limit the number of graphically challenging
programs that you run at any one time.

Updated drivers can equal more efficient drivers. If available, download
and install a more recent driver for your system.

If you have had system problems in the recent past - unexpected shutdowns
or forced restarts - consider reinstalling the existing display driver (if
a new one is not available).
