This is probably a real dumb question but here goes.

I am trying to get text I type (in a text box) in the main window, to
show up in the outline panel? Sometimes I will be there, other times
not! It is very random! I know I am missing something simple.

Thanks much,

Pat Immel

Hi Pat, I assume you are using PPT 2002(XP) because you wrote "outline
panel".
You will only see text that has been inserted in the "normal" text objects.
If you manually insert a text box, that text will not show up in the outline
panel.
hope this helps.

Pat,

Text that appears in the outline panel is in a Placeholder. Those are the
little boxes you can type in where it says "Click to add text". So, if you
type straight into the outline view, it will enter it on the slide.

When typing in Outline view, hit enter, then the tab key. it will make that
slide an area of sub-text under the slide above it.

For better help, always state the version you are using. Because you mention
an outline pane, you are using either version 2000 or version 2002, since
they both feature this.

Text appearing in the outline may seem random to you, but there is a simple
system to it. Any text typed into a MANUALLY created textbox within a slide
will NOT appear in the outline. Any text typed into a text PLACEHOLDER
within a slide WILL appear in the outline. A text placeholder is a textbox
already in the slide as part of the AutoLayout. It normally has a dashed
border and instructs you to type text here. A manually created textbox is
one you drew yourself with the Textbox tool or by adding text to an
AutoShape.
