I can't seem to figure this out (word 2002).
I create a document in Word.
I save it.
I open it up and print it. When printed, large chunks of the text are
converted into some weird character set (mostly "squares"). I look at
the text and sure enough, it's that way in the document.

q1) why is this happening?
q2) how do I prevent this?

Chris,

check and update your printer driver from the printer
manufacturer's website.

Buzz. Wrong answer. I copied the document to my own computer (the
original is on a secreatry's computer) and it still has the weird
characters.

Well BUZZ,

You originally stated:

SO....

If this is the case, then indeed check the printer driver.
Otherwise, check the style applied to the text and modify
it as required. Also check for corruption in your normal
template. Your also welcome BUZZ.

That's just dumb. For example, I don't use the same printers as the
secretary - so copying the doc to my computer would have forced it to
use a different printer driver. But since the messed up characters
still appear when opened on my computer, this cannot be the cause.

Having run a computer help desk for 10 years, there are a couple of
precepts that are hard and fast. Rule # 1 is that giving no answer
(saying "I don't know") is infinitely better than giving a wrong answer.

Otherwise, check the style applied to the text and modify
it as required.

Changing the style used on the messed up text did nothing.

Also check for corruption in your normal template.

How?
