I find that text loses it's tabs and 'jumps' around when
set in XP and viewed on '97. I've taken off the option to
auto fit to text box and it still happens - I've tried
using only Arial font but still the same. any ideas to get
around this?

The font issue would have been my first guess here.

Next guess is that you use tabs and spaces together to align the text.
Don't. PPT 97, 2000, and 2002 all seem to read that a little
differently, hence the misaligned text when switching from one version
to the next.

Use View/Ruler and move the tab carats to align text. Use your CTRL
button for more control while moving the tab carats.
