This is what I got
crème
may not show correctly...

creme must be defined for autocorrection...

look in Tools->AutoCorrect Options
Scroll down (or type in REPLACE box) the list at the bottom to find Creme

If you don't want this change then remove Creme from the list

Check

Tools>AutoCorrect in 2003
Excep Options>Proofing>AutoCorrect options in 2007

If this post helps click Yes

Why does this ? replace the first e in the word Creme in Excel

Do you perhaps, mean:

crème

where the e is showing an accent above it?

Check your auto-correct options for creme --> crème

Probably because in the Text Import Wizard, you didn't specify the correct
code page.

Correct diagnosis, but potentially misleading. The drop-down box in
question in the Step 1 dialog for the Text Import Wizard is labeled
File origin rather than code page. OP seems to have this set to OEM
United States when it should be set to Windows (ANSI).
