Hi,
Is there a way to make text fade in and out in PowerPoint XP? I want
to be able to assign an instruction for a text item to fade i, hold
for x seconds, and then fade out, independantly of what other items
(text or otherwise) are doing.

Basically I want to have ten city names on a slide each fading in and
out at different speeds for as long as the slide is viewed.

Thanks very much in advance for any pointers,
Regards,
MattH

There is only one animation sequence that can run at a time. Independent
animation sequences are not available. But that does not mean that you can
not have it appear to have independent timings.

The key is to start all the items to be animated with the 'With Previous'
setting, then vary the delay setting for each to actually begin. This takes
a little planning so you may want to chart out your animations, second by
second, in a little timeline.

Yes this is possible and as B said, it is all possible with the "WITH
PREVIOUS" command. In order to see where your animations are occurring you
need to see the advanced timeline. This is a very powerful addition to
PowerPoint (though it is fairly simple compared with other multimedia
applications). To view:
- Click on one of the animations.
- Click on the black chevron (upside down triangle) on the far right.
- Select VIEW ADVANCED TIMELINE.
- NOTE: You can widen the custom animation pane by moving mouse over left
edge and then dragging to left.
- From here you can where your animations are occurring and adjust them.

Although it is not online yet, I am adding a "Using The Advanced Timeline"
tutorial to my website. Check for it in the next 2 weeks.

That sounds like it would make a nice addition to the faq, perhaps as a
link. Along with a 'How to...' of various PowerPoint-only animation
effects.

These would be some that would be useful to have out there:

Multiple simultaneous fade in and outs.
Fadeout and motion paths.
Zooming in on a section (not center) of a picture/text.
Credit scroll text box and separate text fade in and outs.
Auto-advance after animation techniques.
Bouncing Ball ...
Kaleidoscope

What else should be included in the Animation 'How to...'s faq?

I have one on animating bullets individually. You can add a link to it
if you want.

Oh, and there's always the Jeopardy exit animation things. I really do
need to do a better tutorial on that and triggers.

Using triggers to control multimedia is another I plan to work on.
