this may be off topic; I would appreciate a pointer to a better
newsgroup, if needed.

I have a nice text editor I picked up off the Internet, but all the
programs I have seen seem to have a size limitation which prevents me
from doing what I need to do, with a lot of hootchy-koo, dividing files
in halves or thirds, etc.

I usually need to process about 1.1 million records of about 675 bytes
each, or in the vicinity of 600,000KB. Any advice would be gratefully
appreciated.

this looks just the ticket! when I get files in from the various
counties' elections department, there are so many varying styles and
components, I have to standardize to my own way. Thanks very much!

Are you working with files that contain voter registration and if they voted
in a Primary, General, election for a given year?

I'm at the end of this project, but I have bookmarked this suggestion,
and will evaluate the software. Many thanx for the tip!

this may be TMI, but the counties have each record with name, address,
districts, and history, but they contain enormous amounts of blank
space, not to mention lack of standardization. unless the state proposes
standard record keeping . . . our files go back to 1988 with every
election, which is about 200.
