I installed and tried many editors and processors quite awhile back
and then got side tracked and the project went stale. Susan has helped
immensely in preparing and in maintaining the html and php!! Thanks
another million Susan!

'jmatt' posted this extensive list below not long ago and I thought
that I'd better get back on task and update the site above, both in
new programs and in newer versions of the ones that I have already
done. I've been "perpetually" working on an office (like 2 years now)
and I'm just about through I think, but it will still be awhile before
I get back to the project. Some feedback will greatly help in
direction in the meantime!
One question, what sort of a machine should I try to put together for
the test machine?
The original test machine was an HP Pavilion, 500 mhz Intel, 256 megs
of ram, a Maxtor 7200 drive running a very solid and stable Win 98SE
OS. My daughter is leaving with it for college in a couple of weeks.
I'm trying to select a "nominal" test machine; neither cutting edge
nor a dog.
My current machine is a 2.4 GHz with a gig of ram running XP Pro, and
I think this is a bit too high end to be considered nominal (it rocks
my socks off though!)
What would be considered nominal today as to processor speed and ram?
I was really just bumbling along in selection of what to compare
between programs. I included what I think important, such as reg
entries and size, and then pretty much looked for broad categories
that some programs had, but others did not. This is what I ended up
with:
1. Registry entries
2. Download size in KB
3. Executable size in KB (not including subprograms or .dll's.)
4. Maximum file size in MB the program can work with on MY system.
YMMV
5. AS (AutoSave open files)
6. S (splits files) J (joins files)
7. MF (opens multiple files) SV (split view) Ex (external viewer)
8. Sp (spell checker) Th (thesaurus) Stat (statistics - words,
characters, etc.)
9. RTF (reads and writes Rich Text Format)
10. Export formats
11. HL (syntax highlighting: hyperlinks, programming languages)
12. Enc (encryption) Er (erase files)
13. eMail (can email a file)
14. S&R (Search and Replace) Strip (strips HTML coding) Macro (built
in macro capability)
15. SW (soft wrap at a user defined column) HW (hard wrap - saves wrap
info with file
I can see that install, or no install, might be good to add. Are there
any other things that you might consider important in an editor or
word processor?
I lost my high speed connection and have plenty to do with standard
editors and light weight word processors. Would someone with a high
speed connection consider doing the large office suites as a sub
project? Not to assist MS with sales, but comparing these with MS
Office upon whatever criterion you think important for a large office
package would be very valuable info imo.
