How can I change the text direction / orientation from Horizontal to Vertical without using Wordart and without having support for Asian languages?

Have you tried either
(1)
select the text
draw menu
rotate or flip
choose "rotate left"
Or
(2)
selecting the text
right click
Format autoshape
text box tab
"tick" rotate text within autoshape by 90degrees?

The usual dodge is to type
L shift+enter
i shift+enter
k shift+enter
e shift+enter
<space> shift+enter
t shift+enter
h shift+enter
i shift+enter
s shift+enter
then format the text as centered
