Text direction in Excel

Can anyone advise me if I can change the direction in
Excel to run vertically (down, preferably), and run over
the blank cells, in the same way that you can horizontally?

I need it for a booking form that will return a numeric
value on all cells that have not been highlighted (we book
cars and shade the cells for the times that it has been
used for).

Due to space, I cant merge or shrink to fit - I need the
data to go over cells below or above the host cell.

Not possible. Excel doesn't provide this functionality, so you're going to
have to accept some alternative.
 
Have you considered "Format Cells / Alignment / Orientation ? Maybe a
little compromise here might be a solution.
 
Try putting the text in a text box (from the Drawing toolbar), setting the
Colors and Lines to No Fill and No Line, and setting the Alignment to orient
the text vertically. This will superimpose the text over the underlying
cells.
