Text Boxes

I write many letters and save copies in a folder.
When I get an answer from a letter, I go to the document and create a large
text box right on top of the text in the letter and put the message
"Received Reply [Date]" in the text box in red letters.
This is my way of putting a "Post-it" note on the document. Sometimes I add
other comments in the text box.

So now I can turn --- Tools | Options | View | Drawings
on or off to see my post-it note.

Am I going about this the right way? Or is there a simpler, better method?

One big problem is that when I add the text box to the document, the date of
the letter keeps updating itself to the current date when I open the doc.
This
is not good. Not what I want.

I can get around this by using Ctrl+Shift+F9, but sometimes that creates new
problems. Is there some way to force the thing to "Never" update the date
field even when a
text box is present?

Insert a CreateDate field instead of Date (or change the existing Date field
to CreateDate).
