The font is alway white when I open a text box. I checked the format and it
says it is black. Any thoughts?

Could you be more specific, please? Sure

What version of PPT are you using? PPT 2007

What do you mean by "open a textbox"? Clicked insert on the toolbar, clicked
text Box and placed the box on the slide where I wanted it. Then would
either type or paste text into the box. It was always white.

How did you check the format? Right clicked on the outline of the text box.

What do you mean by "open a textbox"? Are you typing in a placeholder (where
it says "click to add text," for example), or are you adding a textbox from
the Drawing toolbar (PPT 2003) or Shapes gallery (PPT 2007)?

How did you check the format?

have you checked the design colors? You find them on "Design / Colors", go
to "Create new Theme colors" and have a look at the first color -
"Text/Background - Dark1" should be black.
