What would the group recommend for programs to test out all features
of a used computer I am thinking of buying?

Thanks for any comments.

P.S. It is an old "no-brand" Win 95 machine - owner not sure how much
memory or what CPU speed but it is dead cheap.

If what you want to do is find out the specs, try the Belarc Advisor:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

More than you ever wanted to know about any computer. :-P

Test memory with either one (or all) of these:

Windows Memory Diagnostic <http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp>
Memtest86 <http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/memtest86/>
DocMemory <http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp>

Test disk and file system with <http://www.ontrack.co.uk/dataadvisor/>
WARNING: not freeware! - but functional eval version - useful for your
purpose. No NTFS support, FAT/FAT32 only. See also
<http://www.ontrack.com/dataadvisor/downloadinfo.asp>.

Or, if you know the hard-disk(s) brand name - go to disk manufactures
website and look for free diagnostic software there.

For overall system info/ diagnostics/ performance:
AIDA32 - <http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php>
"a professional system information, diagnostics and benchmarking
program running on Win32 platforms."
16-bit DOS version: <http://www.aida32.hu/aida16.php> (should be able
to run it from a boot-floppy)

Stress-test with "HeayvLoad" from
<http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml>
<http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/hload.zip>
from Readme.txt: <quote> Heavyload is inteded to stress all resources
of a PC (like CPU, RAM, harddisk, network, operating system, etc.) in
order to test, if it will run reliable under heavy load. This is
useful for testing important NT file or database servers before using
them productively, or just to check if your new PC might get too hot
when used intensively. To stress your PC or server, HeavyLoad writes a
large test-file to the temp folder, it allocates physical and virtual
memory and it draws patterns in its window.</quote>

Does anyone know of a program like this that also tests writing to the
whole hard disk? All the programs I've been able to find only read.

Suggestion: ask your question in the following Usenet group
<Then do us all a favor and
post the freeware suggestions you receive there (if any) in a summary
post here. :) (a Google link to the thread there would also be OK :)
TIA!

Each hard disk makers have their own HD diagnosis program.
You can download a copy from their website.
