Hi guys,

I need to test the authoritative restore of a couple of objects in a
2k3 SP2 domain.
I have two questions:

If I have 3 servers:

server1: All FSMO roles (GC too)
server2: GC
server3: GC

Is it ok to perform the authoritative restore on server1 ?
Is it ok to just shutdown the other two domain controllers while doing
the restore procedure and turn them on once the restore is completed ?
Will they automatically replicate with the primary domain controller
and get the new (or old,,,depending on how you see it ;-)) objects
according to standard AD replications ?

Also, does the restore procedure restores exchange attributes, in the
event the restore also includes a mailbox enabled user ?

Thank you so much in advance for your answer.
Have a nice day,
zz

The term 'primary domain controller' is a legacy term that referred to the
writable domain controller in NT4. All the other domain controllers were
backup domain controllers that only held a read-only copy. This is ALL out
the door with AD. Each domain controller is a writable replica.

Just to add, AD DCs do hold different 'Roles" that offer different services
and functions for the domain and forest, such as the PDC Emulator that
mimics a PDC if there were any NT4 BDCs in mixed mode, but once you change
the functional level of the domain, it still remains offering password
synch, time sync and many other services.
Also, does the restore procedure restores exchange attributes, in the
event the restore also includes a mailbox enabled user ?

It will restore ANY object. Objects are predefined by their attributes. So
if you restore a user account that had a mailbox associated to it at the
point in time it was backed up, then yes, it restores that object as it
were.

Restoring specific attributes doesn't count because you don't delete
attributes once they are created, but rather disable them, for whatever
reason. This restores objects only.
Thank you so much in advance for your answer.
