Test viruses

I'm currently experimenting with different AV programs to find one
that suits me the best. Besides ecar, I'm looking for other virus
files to use to test the response of the different programs (dangerous
games yes I know; but I'm willing to risk an old pc box). Any
suggested links?

Sure: www.av-comparatives.org

Click on the Comparatives link for results of tests that used hundreds
of thousands of samples.

Thanks for the link, but sorry, you're way off. As stated earlier I'm
looking for actual virus files themselves in order to do some real
world testing right here at home.

His answer was correct.
Request for virus samples are unacceptable in an anti virus news group.
Please don't do it again.

You mentioned the EICAR file. Use it. (you called it "ecar")

What did you mean by "response" in your original message? If you want to
find out how a particular scanner reacts to the presence/arrival of a
malicious program, EICAR is good enough.

If you want to test detection rates, then you need
a) a huge number of samples, i.e. not 10 viruses randomly downloaded
here and there
b) working samples, i.e. not broken junk (which is abundant on the Internet)

This means you need time and competence. Do you have both?

FYI it is not an un-common practice to use real-world virus samples in
a controlled test on a single pc or network. I'm sure other readers on
alt.comp.anti-virus (and possibly some of the other group moderators
other than yourself) can attest to that.
Please don't do it again.

As moderator of at.comp.anti-virus I am aware that it is your duty to
responsibly mandate what belongs and what doesn't belong in this
usenet group and I apologize if I upset you in anyway. Before you
impose a ban on me let me reassure you I felt my question was a fair
one.

LOL!

Get this into what appears to be your thick head, there are *no* moderators
for this newsgroup. David Lipman, who will no doubt speak for himself, is a
much respected contributor here (and elsewhere) for his ever ready and
helpful information for those needing it. He's not a moderator, and I doubt
that he would wish to be one.

Now, just listen to and take notice of his advice. And you'll find it
better in anynewsgroup to follow a few threads first before vouchsafing
your pearls of wisdom to the unwashed multitude.

Thank you and good night!

Roy

Um, Richard - you do realize that there is no moderator for this
newsgroup.(?)
Before you impose a ban on me

You can't be banned (by anyone) from posting to this newsgroup.

Thank you Roy -- You are correct on all parts.

This is an unmoderated News Group. Moderated News Groups would show "Moderated" when you
list the subject headings in the group. As Roy correctly indicated, I wouldn't want the
job.

Saying what is or isn't acceptable is something all "regular participants" can do.

The problem is vetting the requester. We can't tell if your cause is legitimate or not.
Our intent is deal with malware, not spread it around.

What you also intend on doing is dangerous. You risk infecting your own PC and possibly a
leakage causing a localized infection.

Hey <expletive deleted>, ever heard of judicious snipping? I left the
part that was relevant to my reply. Anyone who wants to can read the
original post without my quoting it, so don't tell me how to post to
usenet.

I see the others have also spoken to the inappropriateness of your
proposed "testing." Did you actually look at the site I suggested?
What makes you think you can do a better job? I was trying to stop you
from deluding yourself by conducting your own, irrelevant tests, but
be my guest. As you now know, you won't get any help in the way of
samples here. Nor any other way with that attitude.

Ease up cowboy. My last intentions were to get your blood temperature

I don't have an attitude, nor am I upset. Get a grip on yourself and
gain some self control for goodness sakes, this is usenet.

fyi it is not an un-common practice to mistakenly think that you can
test anti-virus products meaningfully without lots of time, effort, and
specialized knowledge...

also, fyi it is not an un-common practice for newbs to get all in a huff
after being told that sharing malware samples with strangers goes
against the mores of the group...
