I have a laptop and it has XP and I want to access my work's network but they
say to do this my broadband must have a router attached, how do I know if I
have a router, I can see a 'filter' and a modem but can't tell what a router
looks like. MY work tell me if I use BT then I would have a router but I use
Tesco Broadband as my provider. Any one give me a clue as to what a router
looks like please. Yes I am a dumb blonde.

Hello Jessica,

A router is something that sits between your modem (which is usually provided by the ISP) and your
computers. It is a small box which looks like a modem except that it has one WAN (wide area network)
port which is hooked to the modem and a couple of (usually 4) LAN (Local Area Network) ports which
are hooked to your computer(s). Do you see any piece of hardware between your modem and your
computer ? If yes, care to see what brand/model it is ?

A router is an extra piece of hardware attached between your broadband modem
and your PC/laptop. Some BT style modems have a router combined, but I think
you have to purchase those separately.
If you use a wireless connection to the internet at home then you perhaps
already have a wireless router.

If you are unsure of what the router is then I think you need a friend with
a bit more experience to help you. If you were to buy one then it would need
setting up to work with your Tesco Broadband which uses a BT socket so is
effectively BT broadband supplied by Tesco.

a router will have a number of ports on the back, which look like big
versions of standard telephone sockets, but square... you probably dont have
a router. u can check the documentation that came with your modem, or maybe
the tesco website just in case. if you have the basic broadband package then
it is more than likely just a modem.
