Hello,

I have never worked with Citrix and Tservices and I have a question:

If all my Citrix Clients are Windows 2000 Professional Do I need to install
a Terminal Services Licensing?

I believe TSL it's only necessary when you have Pre-Windows 2000
Clients,isn't it?

Thanks in advance.

You *must* always install a Terminal Services Licensing Server and
activate it.

If your Terminal Server runs Windows 2000 and your clients run W2K
pro or XP Pro, then your clients receive a free TS CAL from the TS
Licensing Server.
So in that case you do not have to buy any licenses, but you must
have an activated LS to issue the free licenses to the clients.

If you run 2003 on your Terminal Server, then you must buy a 2003
TS CAL for *every* client and install it on the TS Licensing
Server. No client receives a free TS CAL when connecting to a 2003
TS.

Thanks Vera.

I have antoher question:

Could I stop TLS when the clients are connected to Citrix without interrupt
the service?

Because If this is Ok I could connect all my clients and then stop TLS to
migrate to Windows 2003 and I shouldn,t work on Weekend ;)

Best Regards,

Carlos

Hi,

I would not try to do as you want to do now. Simple reason is that the live
production work must not stop. Work on weekend... You will will be relaxed.
If any thing goes wrong on a weekday, you will keep a lot of people waiting
for you to fix things. It is better for you to work on weekend that have
every one else join you if there is a problem.

I would say no to your plan. This my experience. I would not take any risk.

From the technical point of view what is the licensing setup you exactly
have now after taking Vera's advice ?

Rahul Nathan

Yes and no :-)
Since clients need both a Microsoft Terminal Services CAL and a
Citrix license, they need to have a connection to the TS Licensing
Server.
In practice, you can take the Licensing Server offline for a day or
two. That is because clients, after having connected, will have
their TS CAL stored locally.
The clients will try to renew their license 7 days before it
expires. So that will in theory give you a week to take your LS
offline and migrate it.

That said, I would never gamble on such a scenario. The chances
that something goes wrong during the migration, if you don't know
exactly how it is designed to work, are just too big.
