Hi, I am using Terminal Services to remotely administer a
Win2K Server. Actually this server is sometimes accessed
by more than one people and it seems that whatever
setting I use, the maximum allowed number of connections
is 2. I have tried various numbers (5, 10 etc)
and "umlimited" but I still cannot get more than 2
connections (per ethernet card). Is this a bug or a
design limitation? What can I do if I want more than two
people accessing the server?

thanks
christos

Hi Christos,

Only two concurrent connections are allows in Remote
Administrator Mode by design. If you would like more than
2 concurrent users to connect and administer the server
via terminal services, you will need to purchase
additional TS CALS and install them onto a MS license
server.

You might want to look at other remote administrator
tools if you are connecting to TS purely for
administrative purposes b/c TS CALS are not that cheap.
There are better and cheaper alternatives out there.

Regards,
Sung

Apart from buying TS CALs and installing them on a TS Licensing
Server (which must run on a Domain Controlle), you have to change
your installation of Terminal Services from Remote Administration
to Application Server. This is done in Control Panel - Add/Remove
programs - Add Windows components.

Note that if you do this, you also have to uninstall and re-
install all applications that are running on the server and which
must be accessible to multiple users.

wow! what a wealth of info. you guys are fantastic!

some questions:
- is the limit for Remote Admin Mode 2 connections total
or 2 connections per ethernet card?
- the server in question is standalone - not a DC or part
of a domain. Does this mean that I should forget about TS
CALs?

thanks
christos

TS in Remote Administration mode limits you to 2 connections in
total.
If your TS is a standalone server in a workgroup, you can install
the TS Licensing Service on the same physical server as TS.
